the seventh ep on frits wentinks bobby donny label brings together some known and unknown producers. the original production is by low end activist, someone who has spent the last 15 years in berlin, bristol and brighton, no doubt picking up parts of the musical styles of those cities as he goes. it features london grime mc trim, an original member of roll deep and an artist signed to james blake s 1-800 label. the remixes comes from frits himself as well as cassius select, who has recently released on uttu and herbert s accidental. park end is a naughty tune with garage tinged drums slipping and sliding beneath menacing rhymes from trim. paranoid synth sounds and an oscillating low end speak of late night urban mischief and its the sort of characterful tune to stand out in any set. cassius select reconfigures the tune as a much more dark and experimental number with a heavy bottom end and huge sub bass that totally envelops you. frits then goes for a more mellow and melodic version, with lazy drums and wilting chords as rainy keys fall from above. it glows like street lights at night and closes out an ep with real attitude

nigeria’s kingsley bucknor’s ‘just u and me’ lp gets the long-awaited reissue treatment from melbourne’s left ear records. after cutting his teeth playing with fela in the 70’s and releasing two afrobeat lp’s kingsley travelled the globe before finding himself in london, it’s here that he laid down 6 distinctive electro-funk tunes inspired by african rhythms and music he’d heard through his travels in the states and in europe. originally issued on kinglsley’s own kab records in ’85 and according to kingsley the release was well received at the time, but due to constraints of international marketing the record remained mostly unknown outside of his homeland. fast-forward to 2017 and the stage is set for a new global audience to appreciate the distinct sound of kb.

our fourth 12- vinyl release, again a full 4 track artist ep, comes from young dutchman cleanfield. relatively unknown at the start of this year, we listened to his demo s and signed them on the spot for a vinyl release. they are really that good, and fall into the same category as the output of fouk, nachtbraker, and more..... while waiting on the production of this release he s made quite the entry as newcomer on the deephouse, nu-disco scene with a first digital release on delve deeper, that s still doing really well in the charts. we re really excited to release these super funky, groovy tracks on beautiful black wax.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

byron the aquarius fires up the mpc for a journey into the stratosphere, bringing the heat for ele records 3rdedition with planet rock, a jazz infected keyboard jam with chopped hip hop samples echoing into the cosmos. cozy bear follows with nudi riddim a delectable mix of african percussion, jazz samples and acidic basslines. on the b side we find more hip hop infused methodology, with glenn davis digging into salsouls back catalogue with his huge summer anthem holdin on. finally, unknown artist is back on ele following on from the huge anthem ru$h. this time it s back to the mpc with a daft punk style 90s disco banger fade (never know).

mark and clive ives have been prime examples of the second life reissue culture can give previously under-appreciated artists, and emotional rescue have been one of the key labels to support the enigmatic brothers from london. as with previous reissues, -a la luna- presents the delicate, naive yet deep sound of woo across a long form album that invites you on a curious journey of discovery. with a melodic instinct bordering on exotica, and unique range of instruments in the sound palette and a dreamlike approach to processing, there s nothing out there that sounds quite like woo, and as ever it s a joy to delve into their sound world and leave more earthly familiarities behind.

hand numbered vinyl only! frits wentink s next release on his own bobby donny label finds him editing some tracks he has been playing on his radio show for a while. they are originally by vertiqua, a german lo-fi hip hop producer that remains unknown. the vinyl only record is limited to 500 copies. all four of these tracks have been edited to make them more suited to the dance floor. the a side comes as an edit that is all about woozy chords and loose, bumpy drums with a rapped vocal stitched deep into the arrangement. it s warm and intake for cosy dance floors. the b1 has organic boom bap drums and kicks, more tape delayed chords and a nice analogue feel all finished with a wordless but beautifully soul-infused vocal. last of all, the louche drums of on b2 are coated in vinyl crackle and laced up with more intoxicating and imperfect chords. this is a perfectly aged combination of hip hop and house that will get any floor bouncing.

aula magna records presents atmen by mekas, a storming record that reveals the artist s latest techno explorations in full effect, featuring stockholm ltd label boss par grindvik as guest remixer. a techno statement shaped by melodic and rhythmic interactions that draw the listener into the artist’s profound sound world.
the a-side opens with the powerful beat of clark nova, a cut that moves forward with a modulating synth line and simple but cleverly designed percussions. this is followed by unknown soldier, an intense techno weapon that reflects the distinctive sound of mekas.
the b-side features both versions of atmen, starting off with par grindivik’s dance-floor rework of the title track that combines a fresh arpeggiated motif and a powerful groove with the emotional spirit of the original. atmen closes the record, an epic ambient techno track built with deep atmospheric synth lines on an intelligent stripped down breakbeat.

dj and producer reggie dokes, along with detroit colleague brian neal, come together for a moving and soulful presentation: detroit luv ep. intertwining both house and techno elements seamlessly in homage to the detroit techno and house legacy. artist brian neal may be unknown to most, but he has been creating music for years. here we find the artist tapped by mr. dokes, presenting his music for the first time in vinyl format. this melodic, dancefloor material, is sure to bring brian neal to the spotlight.

xixa balance ep (apa002) abstract places audio elusive producer xixa delivers the second abstract places audio release. balance is a three-track ep where the co-founder of the label packs a solid techno sound drowned in complex and evolving atmospheres. as first label’s release (clip - gebre, 2016), this is not a 100% club record, we can hear ambient and idm influences, but a1 and b1 are perfect tracks to keep a techno set full of rhythm and tension, and will get its place on any dj record bag. a1 balance is built around a distorted but controlled techno beat. patiently, a wide palette of drones and other-worldly artefacts are growing next to carefully crafted percussive sounds. 1984 opens the b side of the 12”, with a 4 to the floor overdriven bass drum and a reverse reverb announcing its main synth sequence, accompanied by organic hi-hats and clap sounds. a collection of ethereal drones and noises is also used, giving the track a sense of cohesion and gluing its different parts. life inside a snow ball is xixa s personal take on ambient. some of the drones and artefacts from a1 are now mixed with new quasi- harmonic emotional textures and subtle noises emerging from a deep unknown space and forming a complete new sonic experience. balance ep is a very solid second release by abstract places audio that confirms the label sound and philosophy.

kalita records release their first in a series of coveted reissues, starting with the three choice cuts from nst cophie s 1980 private press ivory coast afro-disco album mon da center. after moving to paris in 1976 and having played with other well-known bands such as n bamina, osibisa, and with numerous artists including jimmy hyacinthe and papa wemba, mon da center was ernest s first solo album. recorded at studio caroline in paris s 20th sector over the space of one week, this self-funded ultra-rare album regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. pretty much unknown except to the most hardened of diggers, bian kou , e clolo and mioukouna are guaranteed to set any dance floor alight, with hypnotic afro-disco grooves, killer drums and angelic female vocals.

with lomdit ep we have arrived at levi verspeeks 3rd solo record. three times a charm and so it will be when it crashes onto the dancefloor with tech triumph tamtam named after an unknown friend. 2nd track octo s slick, oozing groove sees right through you and pillages the floor with metal percussion. no later than 6 and a half minutes after you will be met by god s choir singing it s chorus: we smell sausage. watch out that you don t get dipped by that foxy break halfway through! knock knock. who s there? hmmm. hmmm who? hmmm, the last track on lomdit, and it knocks!

girada01 caused heavy rotation among the underground elite and is already considered a future classic. here you have the follow up, another ep from mysterious unknown producers, full of quality and pushing all the right buttons.
